Lewistown Hospital needed a new and modern image yet still wanted to reflect the hospital’s rural context including Amish and Mennonite communities. The solution also had to incorporate a convenient outpatient surgery unit, an updated obstetric unit, and a completely upgraded infrastructure.
The design responded with a new 1-1/2 story glass lobby that features interior motifs and exterior forms inspired by quilting, a strong local tradition. Patients can enter the lobby from a new canopied entrance, accessed from the adjacent parking, and leading directly to the outpatient wing. The lobby’s courtyard garden provides a venue for meeting breaks as well as patient, staff and visitor access.
The new operating rooms are arranged in a sterile core concept, while the old OB/GYN department was converted to a new Labor Delivery and Post-Partum model. A new boiler and chiller plant complemented the infrastructure upgrades and improved patient comfort.
